Pebbles: Trash Box

For those of you that don't know, Pebbles is basically the cool cousin to Nuggets. Extremely obscure garage rock without a focus on musicianship per se, but definitely able to deliver a high number of stone classic tracks.

There's LSD ballyhoo, there's an ad for a wah-wah pedal, this is the ultimate in trash culture! Fashion a full-length epic around the gems of these 110 tracks. Not everything is amazing, and I'm still not hot on the idea of two Kim Fowley songs in a row, but 'The Trip' has grown on me. I even included it on my single-disc edit.

Compile your own, because this thing starts to peter out quality-wise, but it's a fun mood. Definitely good for drinking, or other medicinal apparitions.

Personal favorites include 'Green Fuz', 'Walking on Eggs', and a whole bunch of others. Also, 'I Fought the Law' is on here, the Bobby Fuller original. Awesome. A real good set.

Also, there's a French-sung 'Purple Haze'.

Psychedelic States: Arkansas in the 60s

This post is dedicated to the fellow members of the Boston Mountains Collective.

This compilation is less likely to change your life, but it just might change your mind about Arkansas. We are not all unintelligent "rednecks", a fine majority actually have the capability of an open opinion and idealized goals.

Then, there's Newton County, but Willie Nelson's 2nd favorite marijuana is from there, so suck it. :X

There's a compilation called Psychedelic States of the Sixties or something to that effect, and they issued an album of obscure psychedelic bands from Arkansas as a part of the series.

Television - Live at the Old Waldorf

One of Television's final concerts prior to reunion, this recording sounds like heaven after listening to 'The Blow-Up', the only other widely available Television live release. Make no mistake about it, Television truly were one of the greats. While Richard Lloyd (it might be Tom Verlaine, I'm not sure) appears to be slightly dominated in the mix, Billy Ficca and Fred Smith prove themselves to be one of the swingingest rhythm sections. The bass rocks jubilantly, while the snare and cymbal crack remain consistent.

Highlights include "The Dream's Dream", and, as always, "Little Johnny Jewel" and "Marquee Moon", easily one of my 10 favorite songs.

Also, if you have not already, I implore you to obtain a copy of 'Marquee Moon', one of my favorite records of all-time. So, if you feel you can trust my judgment,

Rock for Light by Bad Brains

This is the original PVC Records mix, since the CD release, though containing a few bonus tracks, features a bungled track listing and the majority of tracks (all but the reggae blips) being slightly off-pitch, sped up even further. I have no idea why.

HOWEVER; this o.g. mix is one of the best punk albums I have ever heard. While the production is A LOT shinier than the self-titled ROIR cassette (this album produced by Ric Ocasek), the Brains still bring the thunder. While the bass is practically inaudible, tracks like "Attitude", "Joshua's Song", and "How Low Can a Punk Get?" still rip with abandon. The reggae is take-it-or-leave-it, depending on your own opinion. Myself, sometimes I dig it, other times, it screeches things to a hault.
